Welcome to the Dancers’ Corner
Toyed with calling this the Adult Ballerina Corner and opted to have it be more inclusive. I will say that the genesis of this page comes out of my exploration of the needs of those, usually women, who start ballet as adults. That said my hope is that related content might serve a wider variety of dancers.
Those who have known me for a long time, or who have actually read the bio on this site, know that the desire to help dancers thrive was my impetus to earn a graduate degree in Kinesiology and become a physical therapist. My own early experience trying to figure out dance teacher instructions that seemed to make zero anatomical sense and get help with a chronic overuse injury led me onto that path.
Over the years, especially when I lived in Seattle, I worked one on one in person with dancers from young students to professionals. Once I left the city this became a very much smaller part of my practice and I miss that. Coming full circle towards the later stages of my career, and with the advent of virtual everything, I would like to again embrace this aspect of my practice.
As I write this in April 2024, I will say that the fact that adult ballet seems to be having “a moment” inspired all of this. After not dancing for many years, several months ago I started using online classes and my deep knowledge of what works for my body to become an “adult ballerina” for the second time, after starting some relatively serious study in my early 20s.
What I have learned about the adult ballet community is that while children and teens often progress through a structured program, adults often take “open classes” where this is lacking. There is no systematic approach to mastering the fundamentals, and the class may not be the ideal place to ask questions
With my background studying ballet, academic training in kinesiology and physical therapy, teaching Kinesiology for Dancers at Cornish College, as well as working individually with many struggling dancers, I strongly sense that I have the tools to fill this need.
My plans include creating content that will appear in the Blog section of this site and ideally in other places around the internet.
I am also offering virtual (and in person if local) sessions individually designed to help you thrive in your dance journey. If you have questions or would like to schedule a session, please use the contact page on this site.
In the “Appreciations” section of this site you can read how some dancers have experienced my work. On the recent “Blog” roll you will find related content.
